When the check engine light comes on, there's something off in your vehicle. A check engine light might indicate a problem.
It might be anything from an improperly situated gas cap to issues with the Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Valve (EVAP). You have no way to know the magnitude of the situation. The only solution is to take your car to a mechanic.
We hope that your mechanic is reputable. However, we've all heard about incidents when a large bill resulted from something relatively minor that maybe the owner could have fixed himself.
One way you can check the validity of the mechanic's diagnosis is getting your own Foxwell NT301 Diagnostic Code Reader. It could save you both time and money.
What Is An OBD-II Diagnostic Code Reader?
The Foxwell NT301 is an Onboard Diagnostics II (OBD-II) code reader. OBD-II is the system the computers in vehicles use for reporting and self-diagnostics.
This standardized setup was developed because of regulations enforced by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). OBD-II specifications were implemented by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
OBD-II systems use the same code designations, communication protocols, and connectors for all vehicle manufacturers.
This synchronization means that the scanner can provide information about all models and makes of vehicles since 1996. OBD-II code readers are devices that can read and clear codes from a car or truck that has the OBD-II setup.
Foxwell NT301 Specifications
The Foxwell NT301 has been specially designed for home vehicle diagnostics. It's easy to use. All you do is plug in the interface cable and hit Enter. The Foxwell NT301 is small enough to hold comfortably in your hand.
It has a sturdy design with a durable rubber edging. It weighs 10.4 ounces and measures 8.7 x 3.1 x 6.7 inches. The keypad, hotkeys, and menu-driver navigation make it easy even for a beginner to use.
The Foxwell NT301 has a 2.8-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) color screen. It’s powered by the vehicle it is diagnosing using the car scan interface cable.
The reader can read and erase codes while accessing information from the Engine Control Unit (ECU), which is what triggered the check engine light in your vehicle. After the problem has been fixed, the NT301 can erase the codes to turn off the check engine light and reset the monitor.
The Foxwell reader supports generic, manufacturer-specific, and pending code requests. It can read the engine condition freeze frame data, including engine coolant temperature and fuel trim, stored at the time the alert was triggered.
It can read, graph, record, and log live sensor data and oxygen sensor monitor test data.
The red, yellow, and green LED notifications let you know when it's time for a smog check. It can help in diagnosing intermittent issues by recording Parameter IDs for comparative purposes. The Foxwell reader can give you confirmation that repairs have been completed during a drive cycle.
Live data is available both in text and graph forms. The automatic vehicle identification number (VIN) retrieval makes it simpler to read the manufacturer specific codes.
If you are unable to figure out the problem after running a diagnostic with the Foxwell NT301, you can print out the data to give to your mechanic. The NT301 can be updated using your computer and Windows OS with the Lifetime Free software update.

Ease of Use
The Foxwell NT301 works on all light-duty trucks, cars, SUVs, hybrids, and minivans manufactured and sold worldwide since 1996. The reader is ready to use immediately. No downloads are necessary to enable it.
The code definitions and menu options are available in several languages, including French, English, Spanish, German, Dutch, Russian, Portuguese, Hungarian, and Italian. The latest fixes and parameters can be updated via the internet without charge. Foxwell provides a limited one-year warranty for its product.
There are a few limitations to the Foxwell NT301 code reader. While it works on almost all electronic engine systems, it can not diagnose issues other than those related to the engine like airbag problems. If your car uses OBDI rather than the OBD-II system, the Foxwell reader will not be able to interact and diagnose issues or provide freeze frame data.
Even though the updates are free, you must have Windows 7 or higher operating systems to download the information. Mac users are out of luck. If you are a newbie at car diagnostics, you may find using the reader and reading the data to be challenging.

The Foxwell NT301 Code Reader isn't able to diagnose all vehicle issues. However, having an idea of what is wrong when the check engine light comes on can potentially save you thousands of dollars in repairs. We rate the Foxwell NT301 4 out of 5 stars.
